Middleman
A Feature Film Documentary
Director / Producer - Kirsten Dickerson
Director of Photography / Producer - Brandon Dickerson
MIDDLEMAN explores the ethics, artistry, and equity of the global artisan sector, showcasing the beauty and importance of heritage crafts, the challenges faced by makers worldwide, and the inspiring people keeping artisan crafts alive. The film delves into the questions of fair wages, cultural preservation, and the complex role of middlemen.
From rug weavers in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco to Appalachian broom makers in Kentucky to the intricate artistry of block printing in India’s Golden Triangle, the film showcases remarkable artisans whose work embodies generations of skill, culture, and creativity.
These artisans, however, are challenged by exploitation from middleman, mass production, disconnection between consumers and makers, and appropriation of traditional crafts by trends. This imbalance threatens the sustainability of heritage crafts. In many communities, younger generations—once apprenticed to family traditions—are turning away from these crafts, discouraged by the lack of opportunity and fair compensation.
Without change, extraordinary art forms that preserve cultures and livelihoods are at risk of disappearing entirely. MIDDLEMAN captures these stories through stunning cinematography and deeply personal narratives, offering a poignant reflection on the future of artisan traditions in a rapidly modernizing world.
Throughout the film you will meet both the artisans and the advocates who are at the forefront and keeping traditional crafts alive. While the
film explores the traditional view of exploitive middleman, we also dive deep into learning about the complexities of bringing artisan craft to
market and some of the ways advocates are redefining the role of a middleman.
Kirsten and Brandon Dickerson are at the helm of MIDDLEMAN. Their partnership as filmmakers ensures the blend of creative storytelling and visionary leadership, grounded in decades of experience in both film and social impact initiatives involving artisans and people living on the margins of our global community. They are co-producing with Kirsten as first-time Director and Brandon as Director of Photography.
The Dickersons are currently seeking funding to help finish the film, and welcome the opportunity to share more for anyone interested. The film is a nonprofit project funded through The Artisan Fund. They are aiming to meet fall festival deadlines and welcome support to make that possible.
